An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the North of Italy, Emilia-Romagna, 45 km south-west of Parma January 27th 2012 at 14:53 UTC (15:53 Italian time). It has been largely felt in northern Italy (until Torino, Bolzano, Trieste, Livorno, Perugia) and up to Switzerland (Bern, Zurich) and France (Nice). More information on this earthquake are available here. According to the International Seismological Centre (ISC) catalogue, this is the first M5+ earthquake of that depth in this region since 1960.

This earthquake follows the M4.9 earthquake that occurred near the city of Parma on January 25th at 08:06 UTC. But unlike this latter which was superficial, the M5.0 Jan. 27th event occurred at a depth of 60 km.
Three days ago, the region of Verona (80 km north-east of Parma ) has been struck my a M4.3 earthquake on January 24th at 23:54 UTC.
